“About the Designer”
Sara grew up in the countryside of Southern Illinois, where her parents’ creativity fostered her ability to express herself. Nature has always been an influence on her life and style. This is evident in her choice of materials. Sara’s style reflects her grandmother’s stories of her heritage. She has collected and made jewelry since she was very young.
Her fashion sense grew in Brazil where she received her doctorate degree in Visual Anthropology. She has experience in photography, indigenous studies, visual media, and the fashion industry. In Brazil she was inspired by the Indigenous, African, and European elements found in Brazilian jewelry. Her strong sense of identity combined with Brazilian fashion has led her to design such visually stimulating pieces.
The company name was inspired by the nickname, Sarara, given to her by her Brazilian friends. Sarara is traditionally associated with mixed ancestry. Since her name was Sara, they affectionately called her Sarara.
Sarara Brazil began by selling its products in Brazilian designer stores on a small scale and has since expanded to the United States, where she currently resides. She works with local Brazilian artisans and uses natural materials from Brazil such as grass, nuts, Amazonian seeds, and renewable types of woods as well as materials from around the world.
